Bithlo Transformation Village
During Spring 2018, I volunteered at Bithlo Transformation Village with their after school program. The program was designed to give students from K-5th grade a safe space to spend time after school. I personally worked on playground duty and in the Art & Crafts section. Below is a link to Orlando's Sentinel in depth explanation of the of Bithlo's Transformation Village and a reflection on the experience.
Valencia East Campus
In Fall 2017, I was able to volunteer at Valencia Community College in one of their English for Academic Purpose courses. It showed me a different side in ESOL education. Below is a detailed account of my time spent in that classroom.
English Language Institute Conversation Hour
I was lucky enough to go to a university that had an English language institute on campus. Students from around the world would come to study English at our school. There were specific hours open for native students to help international students practice their English conversation skills. I spent over 25 hours tutoring students in conversational English. I work with students from China, Japan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Peru, Qatar, Spain, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and Yemen.
During my time there they were also testing out a pilot program to help tutor online high school students in Hong Kong. I was able to participate in a few of these sessions.
Service Learning
During my college career, I participated in service learning in multiple classroom environments. I spent time in Avalon Middle School, Colonial High School, Gotha Middle School, and Olympia High. I work with students in a variety of social economical environments. The project that I am most proud of is the time I spent in Colonial High School. I was part of a pilot program to have Valencia College students help tutor students and assist teachers during school hours. Valencia College aimed to place students in a Title I school to help close the achievement gap. I was placed into freshmen algebra course and helped students study for the math portion of the FCAT. Below are two sites that better describe the project.
Orlando Science Center
From August 2015-May 2016, I volunteered with Orlando Science Center. I worked in Dr. Dare’s Laboratory. I helped guests work through different science experiments. Orlando Science Center would also host special events called Makers Workshops. During Makers Workshops, I would work with a smaller group of guests and teach them a new skill. Projects ranged from coding to soldering. It was an eye opening experience that influenced me to be able to create more interactive lesson plans for my future students.
Valencia Future Educators
During the Spring term of 2015, I worked with Valencia Future Educators. I would set up events for the club. The club would also support educational endeavors within the community. They would also provide support for other cultural educational clubs that were offered at Valencia. Once a semester they would throw an education event for the children at the local homeless shelter and provide free educational material. This was my first step into connecting to fellow students who were also in the field of education.
Rotary Events
From August of 2007 to May 2008 I was a part of a Rotary Youth Exchange program. During my time in Chiang Mai, I would work with my local club to offer support to the community. I worked with Rotary to help plant crops, provided rural schools with resources, and spent time with children in orphanages. My time with Rotary was an eye-opening experience. This experience set me on my current pathway and ignited my passion for supporting my community.
